Ewan McGregor Says Doctor Sleep Movie is Faithful to King’s Book

by | Aug 6, 2018

One of the biggest hurdles that the upcoming Shining sequel will have , is it’s relationship to the 1980 Stanley Kubrick adaption. You see, Kubrick’s film took many liberties with the source material, to the point where Stephen King absolutely hates the movie. The biggest difference (****Spoilers by the way.. You were warned****) is that The Overlook Hotel is blown to smithereens and in a huge fireball, killing Jack and putting to rest all the souls trapped inside (or so you thought!). The question to whether the hotel would still be standing or not, was one that is on every Stephen king fans’ lips. In other words, would Doctor Sleep be a sequel to Kubrick’s film, or King’s novel.

Thankfully, recently cast Ewan McGregor has cleared up this mystery with a TV appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The actor has taken some time out recently and is currently prompting Christopher Robin (2018). It’s here that he dropped some news about the King sequel.

Well, it’s very faithful to the book, the script. So, if you’ve read the novel, that’s the story we’re going to tell.”

So it looks like it should be a direct adaption from King’s novel, without any interference from the 1980’s film. However, the film will certainly need to have a flash back to what happened to hotel, so that film goers will understand Doctor Sleeps ending. McGregor joked that viewers could just read the book to find out what will happen in the upcoming film. I would say that you should read it anyhow! It’s a really good novel.

I’m super excited about this one, so keep an eye out here at Horror.Land where we’ll bring you more  news at it hits. In the mean time, you can watch the full interview below.
