Exploring Cinema’s Most Controversial Horror Movie
There are not many films out there that can lay claim to being banned in over 40 countries and led the producers being prosecuted for murder, but Cannibal Holocaust found itself a member of this club when it release to cinemas in 1980. Directed by Ruggero Deodato, Holocaust took it’s found footage format about a missing documentary makers in the Amazon, and turned it into a scandal, claiming that it’s footage was real. something that the Blair Witch revived, to much success, almost two decade later in 1999. Holocaust failed to get that type of media attention though, instead, it’s graphic nature and footage of people being murdered and eaten earned the film a ban across the globe.
The film was so convincing that Deodato was actually charged with obscenity and for making a snuff movie. However, walking the “dead” actors into court certainly cleared up a few things.
Youtuber Ryan Hollinger explores this twisted tale and looks at just what made Cannibal Holocaust one of the most controversial horror movies of all time.
