Beetlejuice 2 Confirmed with Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortega
It’s time to shake up some juice, as the ghost with the most is offcially heading back to the big screen. Annouced this week, Micheal Keaton will finally be jumpin back into the role of BeetleJuice, a film that has been in the making since 1998.
In the orginal film, directed by Tim Burton, recently deceased couple Barbara and Adam Maitland turn to a mischievous poltergeist, named Beetlejuice, to help then scare away the Deetz family.
With news of a new film, it’s worth noting that Beetlejucie has had a very succesfull run of cartoons, comics and toys, and almost had a 90’s sequel.
Shortly after the film release, a successfull animated TV series aired from 1989 to 1991, which spawned a huge amount of merchandise. It was around this time that he first script for a sequel started to do the rounds. Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian, written by Jonathan Gem, focused on the Deetz’ move to Hawaii, where a plan to build a holiday resort is hamppered by spooks. Luckily for us all, the script was shelevd and it’s now been 25 years since the original release.
In 2011, rumours began to circulate of a reworked script by Seth Grahame-Smith, and Winona Ryder fuled the fire. Talking to The Daily Beast, she said..
“I’m kind of sworn to secrecy but it sounds like it might be happening. It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia Deetz so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”
Grahame-Smith finished his script in 2016, and a year later Mike Vukadinovich was asked to re-write the seqeul, but this project was ultimtaly shelved.
But what about the new film? Brad Pitt’s Plan B is producing Beetlejuice 2. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who worked with Burton on Wednesday, penned the screenplay this time around, which is kinda coincidental, as Wednesday star Jenna Ortega was one of the first names announced. Satrringa long side Keaton and Ortega will be Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux. The best news is that Tim Burton will be back as the films director.
BeetelJuice 2 is due to start shooting within the next month, and is aiming for a big screen release on Sept. 6th 2024.
More news on this soon.
