Tonight we will see a “Blue Moon” , or  a second moon within one single lunar month. This occurrence happens once every 2.7 years and gave birth to the saying “Once in a blue moon”.

Whilst this is a fairly regular occurrence and not as spectacular as total or lunar eclipse, it does shed some light on a film moment that has been bugging me for years.

In American Werewolf in London, David Kessler, recently bitten by a lycanthrope, undergoes a nasty transformation. The moon is full and his body starts to twist and stretch into a hideous wolf creature. The following night, he transforms again! This always really bugged me, and it wasn’t until recently that i figured out that the answer was staring me in the face all along. Well, maybe not in the face, but in the ear. What was the name of the piece of music playing when he transforms? Blue Moon by the The Marcels. Yep, David Kessler transformed at the rare occasion of a Blue Moon.
