Clarice Starling Gets her Own Show!

by | Jan 13, 2020

Having smelt the (quickly dwindled ) success of NBC’s Hannibal, it sounds like CBS are about ready to throw their hat into the Thomas Harris ring! Harris is the author of Red Dragon, Hannibal, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal Rising, the books that all feature the Dr. Hannibal Lecter as a constant villain. Whilst the book series has had a successful film run over the years, with the Academy Award winning adaption of Silence of the Lambs being the highlight, it’s reputation in television is spotted at best. It’s from Silence of the Lambs that Clarice Starling heralds from and the new show will center on this rookie FBI agent.

The TV series Hannibal failed to grab the rights to Silence of the Lambs and so was unable to introduce characters such as Starling, but managed to have successful run with Hannibal’s FBI profiler Will Graham as the show’s main protagonist. The show saw Will hunting down serial killers, with the help of psychologist Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The first two season were thoroughly entertaining TV, but the third series was a major departure as showrunner Bryan Fuller pushed way to much emphasis on the art style over the story, and it the show was quickly cancelled after only a few episodes of the series ran.

The new show, according to Variety, will follow Clarice Starling after the events of “The Silence of the Lambs,” and will be run by writers and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. They said…

“After more than 20 years of silence, we’re privileged to give voice to one of America’s most enduring heroes – Clarice Starling… Clarice’s bravery and complexity have always lit the way, even as her personal story remained in the dark. But hers is the very story we need today: her struggle, her resilience, her victory. Her time is now, and always.”

No word if Hannibal Lecter will show up, but it’s a pretty easy guess that he will. In the meantime, fans are rallying behind #SaveHannibal in the hope of bringing back the once cancelled show. However, Fuller took to twitter to break the news that even if they did get a fourth season, it sure as hell would not include Clarice Starling.
