Sony to Move ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ & ‘Morbius’ to March 2021

With the world on shutdown, it seems that Sony Pictures may well be forward thinking on their release strategy, as two of this years biggest pictures have now been shifted to 2021.

At this current period in time, we simply don’t know how long we are going to be in quarantine, and for the big film studios, that means that we don’t know when cinemas are going to be open again. Even if they did open back up again in a couple of months, you have to wonder if people will have the confidence to head straight back to a crowded room fill of people shortly after a massive world pandemic. Many of these studios will have a choice to push thier films or gamble away thousands, if not millions of pounds of revenue on a VOD release.

We have already seen that many films that are currently out at the cinema (before they all shut) cut their losses and dropped their films straight onto VOD. Films such as The Invisible Man, which was only just released late in February, the sudden closure of the cinemas was a huge punch in the arm for for films that should have had runs for six weeks. The choice to put their films straight out as a digital release is just damage control.

There is simply now way in which a $100 million movie would ever bring in as much money as a wide cinema release, in a VOD format, and that is probably why Sony is shifting two of it’s hottest properties to next year.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is moving form it’s July release to March 5th, 2021 and Sony’s next big “Spider-verse” movie Morbius, starring Jared Leto, will be chomping down into cinemas two weeks later on March 19th, 2021.

We are yet to understand the extent in which the Coronavirus will effect us moving forward, but it seems that many Studio executives are hopeful that in a years time, the storm will be mostly over.
