Tom Hardy Will Be Venom in MCU

by | May 22, 2017

A film based on the Marvel Character Venom has just been greenlit by Sony. For Spider-Man fans, this is truly great news as previous attempts at getting Venom a stand-alone film have all fallen flat.

Before Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was released, Sony had spoken about giving Venom he’s very own film, but the critical panning and general hate form fans forced Sony to ditch further films. Instead they decided to reboot the series. As the Second film of the new series approached, again Sony announced plans for a Sinister Six and a Venom movie, only for the film to flop and future plans put on hold. When Sony finally gave in and joined the Marvels Cinematic Universe, the studio found that they were now in the best position to launch a Venom film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, will be Sony’s very first MCU film, with Venom following in its tracks next year. This gives the studio two Marvel based characters to start a pretty solid Spidey-verse series of films.

Venom (2018)

The big news about the Venom film is that Mad-Max star Tom Hardy has signed up to play Venom/Eddie Brock. This is a huge surprise as there were no rumours or anything leading up to the announcement about the stars involvement.  Apparently, Hardy is a big fan of Venom and the announcement came with a picture of Hardy wearing a Venom top.

In the comic, Venom is a Symbiote creature that was first attached to Spider-Man, but quickly abandoned, where it found Eddie Brock. They both hate Spider-man/Peter parker and go on to become abominable foes. They even team up with Spider-Man to fight some of the bigger ‘bads’ that pop up in the Marvel Universe. It will be interesting to see what direction they will take the characters.

The film will be released on October 5th, 2018 and production will start this fall.
