Highly anticipated is not the word I’d use to describe the wait for this film. With fans waiting since 1989 to see more of the proton wielding Ghostbusters, the trailer for the latest installment is finally here.  And whilst it’s not exactly in the way fans had hoped, this all female re-boot looks as if it’s it’s bringing the spirit (no pun-intended) of the series back to the big screen.

Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, the film sees Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Abby Yates (McCarthy) as a pair of unheralded authors who believe ghost are real. When Manhattan is invaded by spooks, Erin and Abby team up with nuclear engineer, Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon) and subway worker, Patty Tolan (Jones) to save the world from a evil demon known as Rowan.

The film promises we’ll see some classic characters, including Slimer and the Staypuft Marshmallow Man. And if you missed it, Boston Herald hit us up a few days ago with some info on how Slimer will fit into the movie.

In the reboot, Slimer appears during the Ghostbusters’ first official gig, we’re told. The ’busters — Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones — are called toRockefeller Center to dispense with the ghost of a fat Mafia guy. McKinnon — the Egon in this version — tests out her new Proton Pack on the ghost and shoots off his arms, legs and torso, leaving only a disembodied head. Voila, Slimer!

The head gets away, but videos of their battle with the ghost go viral. Unfortunately, everyone thinks it’s a joke and the evening news refers to the gals as “Ghostbusters.”

It certainly sounds interesting to say the least, and I love how they are fleshing out McKinnons role to the extent of testing out equipment, something sadly missing from the original. In the 1984 original, Egon equipment was just there, without us seeing anything getting built or properly tested. And it all worked!

If you missed the trailer announcement you can watch it here, but the real deal is just below.
