The Return of Dario Argento with ‘Dark Glasses’!

The last time we saw a Dario Argento film was back in 2012 with the awful Argento’s Dracula 3D, which completely failed to show case either Dario’s, or his daughter Asia’s Argento , talents in the industry. So I’m happy to report that this tiny little bump in an otherwise outstanding career has not soured our favorite Giallo director from his art, as he is set to return with a new film in 2022.
Screen Daily has unveiled a very first-look at the Rome-based Giallo chiller Dark Glasses, which promises to be a firm return to form for director Argento. The film will star Ilenia Pastorelli as a prostitute tragically blinded by a serial killer in a botched attack. Whilst trying to get her life back in order, she takes in a young Chinese boy, whose life has also been altered forever by the maniac’s actions. The new thriller will also Asia return for her fathers latest piece, in a supportive role. One of Asia’s very first appearances in film was in Lamberto Bava’s horror sequel Demon’s 2 which Dario co-wrote and produced.
“Set against the backdrop of Rome and its surrounding countryside, it brings together the contrasting worlds of a high-class prostitute working in the chic hotels around Rome’s Via Veneto and a young boy hailing from the city’s Chinese community.”
“She’s an adult and blind, he’s too young to get by on his own. In addition, two different cultures: she is Italian, the child is Chinese. This combination is the engine of Dark Glasses,” writes Argento in a director’s note.
The film represents my desire to explore two worlds: hers, we know it; his is more mysterious, and it will let us enter the neighbourhoods, houses and customs of the Chinese community in Rome, where they created a real ‘Chinatown’.”
The film wrapped in late August and it set to premier in 2022, so keep your eyes peeled for more news on this soon. Check out the new image below.
