Dimension films have not been fairing very well recently, losing the rights to the Halloween franchise and rushing out another Hellraiser sequel. It would be easy to think that the company was running a little low on steam, but it would seem that they have a few cards up their horror sleeves. Recent press releases hint that they have begun filming of a 10th film in Children of the Corn series. The new movie titled Runaway, is currently shooting in Oklahoma City, with Piranha 3DD director John Gulager.
The press release reads
The Oklahoma Film + Music Office (OF+MO), with producer Mike Leahy of Strike Accord and in association with Gatlin Returns, Inc., is pleased to announce the beginning of principal photography on Runaway. The film, which will utilize the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate administered by OF+MO, will be shooting in Oklahoma City and the surrounding area including Luther and Coyle.
Runaway tells the story of a young woman named Ruth, who finds herself pregnant after escaping a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. Ruth struggles to spare her son the horrors of her childhood while trying to outrun her past.
Bloody Disgusting alerted us all that this film is actually a Children of the Corn film a few days back before the press release, and as if to confirm thier theory, the press release lets slip a huge peice of evidence, Gatling Returns Inc. Gatlin was the name of the rural Nebraska town in the original Stephen King short story and 1984 film.
It is also possible that Runaway could be a direct sequel to the 2009 Children of the Corn TV movie remake, which featured Alexa Nikolas as a character called Ruth.
At the moment, it’s all speculation, but the evidence is there if you look. I’m not sure if the world even needs another Children of the Corn film, but I’m always keen to see what they produce.
